Prepare for Family Mediation: Family Mediation Resources

Separation and Divorce:

  • Understand your options and get a personalized list to work through separation or divorce in Alberta using the Family Resolution Hub.
  • If you want to make your agreements legally binding or would apply to the courts if you do not resolve an issue in mediation, understand the mandatory requirements before you can apply in some Family Court locations, including in Calgary and Edmonton.


Parenting Plans:

  • Take Parenting After Separation (PAS) course online to learn about what to include in a parenting plan and understand your options. 
  • Take Parenting After Separation for Parents in High Conflict online for information about how to communicate when you are in conflict. 
  • Get more information to make a parenting plan from the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts Parenting Plan guide and template. 
  • Get more information to create a parenting plan using a tool from Canada Department of Justice. 


Child Development:

  • Watch How Brains are Built: The Core Story of Brain Development to learn more about supporting your children during stressful times.
  • Family Violence and/or Abuse (control, financial, emotional, physical):

Legal information:

  • Find legal information about common topics in separation or divorce with these  resources from the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta 


Child Support:

  • Federal Child Support Guidelines
  • Federal Child Support Table Look up


Financial Decisions:

  • If you want to discuss any financial matters in mediation, including child support, share your financial information with each other before the mediation. 
  • If you are only deciding child support, you may need the information from pages 1-5, 
  • if you want to discuss Section 7 expenses, then you also need the information from page 10. 
  • If you want to talk about dividing assets or spousal support, you will need the information from the remaining pages.
